Live Theater at Elmwood Playhouse

Elmwood Playhouse in Nyack presents The Nance https://www.elmwoodplayhouse.com/show/the-nance/ , written by Douglas Carter Beane, opening May 16 and running through June 7. Praised as “a nearly perfect work of dramatic art” by The New Yorker, this powerful production incorporates music and comedy in a story that sheds light on the lives of comedic burlesque performers during the final days of vaudeville.
Directed at Elmwood by Alan Demovsky, the cast includes Chad Paul Hudson, Aaron Newcome https://www.elmwoodplayhouse.com/volunteer/aaron-newcome/ , Andrew Lionetti , Tiffany M. Card, Sam Snyder https://www.elmwoodplayhouse.com/volunteer/sam-snyder/ , Candace Lynn Matthews, , Liam Thomas, Janet Fenton https://www.elmwoodplayhouse.com/volunteer/janet-fenton/ .
The Nance opens May 16 and closes June 7, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm, and a captioned performance on Thursday June 5 at 8 pm.
Throughout the run of the show, Elmwood’s lobby gallery exhibits the work of the artists of https://www.nyackartcollective.com Nyack Art Collective, with a pre-show gallery reception starting at 6:30 pm on opening night Friday, May 16, to meet the artists and enjoy complimentary wine and cheese from local gourmet shop, Scott and Joe.

Nyack Famous Street Fair, Sunday, May 18

A ” Don’t Miss” family fun day awaits you at the Nyack Famous Street Fair held on Sunday, May 18, from 10 to 5 on Broadway, Main, and Cedar Streets in downtown Nyack.  It is the ultimate shopping and dining event with over three hundred exhibitors, from five states, with an excellent selection of arts and crafts, plus new retail items, unique gifts, home décor and festival foods.  Shoppers will be able to browse a diverse array of handmade items including pottery, art, hand crafted jewelry, clothing, soaps, candles, photography, fiber to woodworkers, mixed media and more will be on display.  Also, great retail booths featuring apparel, jewelry, children’s, garden items, toys, signs, home décor and desserts offer an abundance of unique shopping experiences.

For the foodies, all kinds of delicious food and drinks will be available including Cousins Lobster and Baked Macaroni trucks, empanadas, Italian, Greek, Jamaican, Latin, Thai, Mexican foods, zeppoles and more.  Nyack’s outdoor cafes will be offering specials. Be sure to visit the many interesting boutique shops lining downtown. Music will be playing in the gazebo.

Wish We Were Floyd (Rivertown Film)

Rivertown Film welcomes Wish We Were Floyd, the authentic Pink Floyd tribute experience, to The Nyack Center on May 17. Their live performance includes one complete album side from The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, and Wish You Were Here, accompanied by a stunning light show that includes original visuals as well as visuals created for the live performance of these records by Pink Floyd.
Wish We Were Floyd pays homage to the masters of psychedelic rock and unites the art of music with the art of motion picture.

Poetry Reading featuring Dawn Lundy Martin & Matthew Gellman

Join All Ways Writing Collective for a free, open-to-the-public poetry reading at The Angel Nyack, located upstairs at 18 South Broadway, Nyack, NY. The evening will feature 5 community readers, followed by guest authors, a Q&A, and book signings. Community readers include Kelly Jo Lillian, Kirsten Meehan, Kate MacLaughlin, Early ‘Owen’ Minoza, and Cherish Pratt.

Dawn Lundy Martin is an American poet and essayist. She is the author of four books of poems: Good Stock Strange Blood , winner of the 2019 Kingsley Tufts Award for Poetry; Life in a Box is a Pretty Life , which won the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Poetry; DISCIPLINE , A Gathering of Matter / A Matter of Gathering , and three limited edition chapbooks. Her nonfiction can be found in n+1 , The New Yorker , Ploughshares , The Believer , and Best American Essays 2019 . Martin is the Toi Derricotte Endowed Chair of African American Poetry at the University of Pittsburgh and Director of the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics.

Matthew Gellman’s first book, Beforelight, was selected by Tina Chang as the winner of BOA Editions, Ltd.’s A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize. He is also the author of The Understudy, forthcoming with Four Way Books in 2027, as well as the chapbook Night Logic, selected by Denise Duhamel as the winner of Tupelo Press’s 2021 Snowbound Chapbook Award. Matthew has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Brooklyn Poets, Adroit’s Djanikian Scholars Program, the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, Bread Loaf Writers Conference, and elsewhere. His poems have appeared in Gulf Coast, Prairie Schooner, Poetry Northwest, Indiana Review, Ninth Letter, Lambda Literary’s Poetry Spotlight and other publications. He is currently a PhD candidate in literature and creative writing at the University of Southern California.
